Post Card from my father’s shop at the airport in Santa Maria in the Azores, my birth place. You can see the military/civilian airport at the top left. The road leading from the airport to Vila do Porto, our home, is pictured top right.
My father, Joao da Cruz Mendes Abreu, Viscount of Miralva, was born on November 5th, 1895 in Ceia-Serra da Estrela, Portugal. This picture was taken when he was in his 50′s, around the time of my birth.
My mother, Maria Lidia Teresa Lemos Sequeira Passos Faria was born on October 15, 1913 in Funchal, Madeira Island, Portugal. In this picture she is wearing a blouse that she made from surplus parachute nylon from the American Air Force base on the Island. Her hairnet, too, was made from the parachute guide lines. Her vest and bow were made of red velvet.
In the year 1949 my parents were married. After dating in Madeira, where they met, they moved to the island of Santa Maria (Azores), where they began their married life. This picture was taken in 1951, six months before I was born. My father is standing on the back patio of our house in Santa Maria. Mother is peering out their bedroom window.
